This is the 2nd of 3 chess academies, each of which will be held at the Cherry Hill Library. At around lunch time, we will go to the Playdrome (on a Playdrome bus) for food and recreation. Students can pack a lunch or purchase a lunch there.  The price of bowling and billiards is covered, but arcade games are not.  Each camp day runs from 9:30-5.  The camp is meant for players in 3rd-12th grade below the rating of 1500.  Note: If you were part of the 1st camp, skills will be reinforced and strengthened; new material will also be introduced.

Staff:  Dan Herman (West Chess Coach)

James Cho  (Bell's School Chess Coach)

We will be assisted by  former and current West players.

The following topics will be covered during each camp.  In addition, students will have time to play against each other in tournament style play.

How to Think Like A Strong Player:

Time will be devoted to helping students adopt a method of thinking

that will pay off when playing games.  Also, students will review games

to show how the method is applied.

Students will review basic principles of the opening and learn some advanced principles.

Students will review basic endgames as well as some that are more advanced:

King & Queen vs. King

King & Rook vs. King

King & 2 Bishops vs. King

King, Knight & Bishop vs. King  This rarely comes up but is a great conceptual exercise.

 King & Pawn vs. King

Phildor’s postion   & practical applications

Lucena’s postion & practical applications

Rook & pawn endgames

Relative Value of the Pieces

Most students know the basic value of the pieces but may not understand how

the value of each piece changes as a result of particular positions on the board.

Tactical Practice

Student will study and solve many puzzles taken from real games in order to better understand, recognize, and use tactics in their own games.

Playing Games

Students will play games, and we will review various positions in these games to teach mini-lessons.
